Shortly after his move to Indiana, Lyman SIMPSON married a widow lady Clarissa BALDWIN PUTNAM who was born in Cavendish, Vermont. Her deceased husband Kendall PUTNAM was also from Cavendish. (Wonder if he is tied to the KENDALLS who have been posted recently?) I believe Clarissa and Kendall PUTNAM'S children were born in Vermont. At least some of Clarissa BALDWINS siblings also moved to Blackford County as did several of the PUTNAMS. The PUTNAM males all contracted some type of illness and the sons all died in their prime. Strangely their older father survived the disease. The PUTNAM parents went back to Cavendish after their sons deaths. I am not connected in any way to these families from Cavendish other than that my ancestor married one of them. I did look at a copy of the book "Families of Cavendish : the early settlers of the Black River Valley in Windsor County, Vermont : a social and genealogical history" and was delighted to find part of someone's diary who had make a trip to Blackford. I found out that Lyman and Clarissa SIMPSON had an apple orchard. I had known hardly anything about my SIMPSON line. My gr. gr. grandmother was raised mostly in Illinois and Missouri so really didn't know her family. I have also gleaned a little other information from various searches of Blackford County records. [17] Lucy was clearly conflicted by this family situation. However, to begin to understand this dream it is necessary to review the context of the development of the religious discourse in the upper Connecticut and White River Valleys. In 1769 Eleazar Wheelook founded Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, to teach the Native Americans, prepare missionaries, and train ministers for the rapidly growing towns in the region [18] -- including Elijah Lyman [19] and Solomon Aikens, [20] uncles of Joseph Sr.'s later sisters-in-law, Clarissa Lyman and Mary Aikens. ______________________________ Kendall, b. Kendall died of the measles during the epidemic at Montpelier (Wells County), Indiana, 28 March, 1837. Clarissa m. 2nd (as his 2nd wife), in Montpelier, Indiana, 25 April, 1841, Lyman Francis Simpson of Indiana (b. Brookfield, Mass., 25 May, 1797, son of Charles Francis & Abigail (King) Simpson). Mr. Simpson owned a tavern on High Street in Montpelier, Indiana, and had his farm in Harrison (Blackford Co) Indiana. When the 1860 census was taken, that farm was valued at $2,500. Lyman had three children by his 1st wife, Mary Ann Clapp, who died in Brewster, Illinois, 10 Feb., 1840: Fidelia (b. NY, 1831), Enos, (b. NY, 1833), and Elvira (b. Ill., 1838). Clarissa Baldwin Putnam Simpson d. in Harrison, Indiana, 23 Dec., 1866 (age 63). When the 1870 census was taken, Lyman was 72 years old, and still farming. Lyman had a 3rd wife, Rachel Lockwood (b. NY, 1836). His son Lyman E. Simpson (age 22), was living at home and working as a painter. In 1880, Lyman was 83 years old and his 3d wife Rachel was 45. Children: 1. Sarah Adaline Simpson, b. 1829/30. She m. in Indiana, William T. Skull 2. Elizabeth Marie Simpson, b. 1832. She m. -- Kashner 3. Augusta Simpson, b. Indiana, 1842 4. E. Lyman Simpson, b. Indiana, 1848. He m. – Eliza Dennis (b. Indiana, 1858, dau. of --). In 1880 they were living in Harrison, Indiana, next door to his father. Lyman was employed as a painter. They had two children, Addie (age 4), and Mabel (age 2). Mr. Simpson d. in Union Township, Indiana, 20 July, 1918. 3. Newton, b. 13 Jan., 1805. + 4. Franklin, b. 4 Jan., 1807 + 5. Mary Whipple, b. 22 Oct., 1809. She m. at Cavendish, 1 Jan., 1827, Asa Parker Jr. of Reading, Vt. (b. Reading, 12 Oct., 1800, son of Asa & Ascha (Wench) Parker). She d. Cavendish, 9 July, 1829 (age 21), and is buried in the Coffeen Cemetery. 6. Ezra Granger Jr., b. 14 August, 1814. He removed to Montpelier, Indiana where he died unmarried 5 April, 1837. 7. William B., b. 14 May, 1815. Will removed to Indiana, where he died unmarried, 8 April, 1837 (age 22). 8. Charles, b. June, 1816. Only the given name of his first wife, Margery, is known. His second wife was Alice Collingridge, who survived him. Although he had twelve sons between his two wives, only six were still surviving by 1498, the year he settled the manor of Baldington at Thame on his son, Geoffrey (IV), with remainders to his other sons Michael, Peter, Edward, William, and Thomas. The monument he shares here with both of his wives was described by Rev. Frederick George Lee's in his book, 'The History, Description & Antiquities of the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Thame' (London: Mitchell & Huges, 1883; pg. 93): ### "In the north wall of the transept, towards the eastern part...an altar-tomb...in commemoration of GEOFFREY DORMER and his two wives [MARGERY and ALICE]; one with five sons and eight daughters underneath, and the other with seven sons and five daughters." On the monument are two coats of arms and a shield bearing his merchant's mark. "Round the edge of the tomb the following inscription in brass still remains: Inscription: Orate pro animab's Galfridi Dormer, mercatoris stapule ville Cali's et Margere et Alicie uxores eius qui Quidem Galfridus obiit nono die Marcii Anno d'ni Mil's'mo qingentesimo secundo quor'a'i'ab' propicietur Deus. Went to China in 1920 in connection with the business; however, shortly after he arrived in China the business had failed. His father sent him money to live on until he finally secured employment with the Texas Oil Company (TEXACO). When he was working in Manchuria he visited a friend of his in Harbin, China, who rented quarters in my maternal grandfather's house. He met my mother there and three months later they were married - on 2/4/25. He continued his career as a businessman traveling to many countries. He was conversational in most of the languages of the countries where he was posted, including Chinese, Russian, Danish, Dutch, Japanese, German, some French, and English. He had 3 children, the oldest died at three years old of dysentery. He died on 6/28/80 on a trip to Copenhagen, Denmark, of pneumonia. He was formerly freight brakeman with the New York Central RR, and then began the same work with the Missouri Pacific RR in Wichita in 1953. Jennie and Bill first met in Wichita, while Bill was stationed at the Hutchinson, KS air base. "Bill belongs to the brotherhood of railroad trainmen. He likes to fish and hunt. We all like to go swimming and to travel. I belong to the alter society of our church. Right now I'm tied down raising a family and running a taxi service three times a day to and from school with the children. Does anyone have much time for outside interests when raising a family of three children 1 ½ years apart in age? I'm waiting for my day!" Imagine my surprise when I returned home and found the Ford with the front wheels in the ditch and the rear end suspended in the air. We've lived only nine years together, but they've been full, happy ones. Our only major accomplishments have been fourll, blond, with blue eyes and a ruddy complexion. He definitely is not the chatterbox of the family, but he has his firm convictions and stands for them. Seems odd how he can never find anything unless a neon sign pops up saying, 'Here I am.' He seems never to remember birthdays and other special days without being reminded - except Christmas, and I guess Christmas just hits him over the head and he can't miss it. He's great for always bringing turtles, geese, dogs, etc. home for the children. As a handy man he's A-1. He practically built our new house himself, plus the furniture for the house. As for our marriage, he thinks we're a great team and that I'm his only one. As to good nature, he has far the best. A native New Yorker, he's become a typicald, most of all me, his wife."1972. Michael was a son of Geoffrey Dormer (d. 1503) by his second wife, Alice Collingridge, like his father he was also a Merchant of the Staple of Calais, where he kept a wool warehouse. He was Sheriff of London in 1529, and an Alderman from 1531 until his death. He served as Lord Mayor of London in 1541, and was knighted in consequence of that office. He was also Master of the Mercers Guild in 1531 and 1545. Before 1505, he married Elizabeth Davey (or Davie)*, and by her had surviving at the time of his death, six sons (Thomas, William, Geoffrey, John, Ambrose and Walter); and one daughter, Joan. His wife died in 1535, and he married the twice-widowed Katherine Dallam on 21 Aug 1539, by whom he had no issue. Dormer had extensive holdings in Oxon and Bucks, including the manors of Long Crendon and Hughenden, as well as a large residence in London where he was residing at the time of his death. The register for this church states that "S[i]r Michaell Dormer knight & alderman" was buried here 23 Sept 1545. (The Church of St Lawrence Jewry next Guildhall--the official church of the Lord Mayors of London and the London Corportation--was twice destroyed: in 1666 By the London Fire, and in 1940 during the Blitz. It was rebuilt both times, but its churchyard no longer exists.)
